Full Description:
Once again, the El Dorado Hills Neuro-Linguistic Learning Center will host its Second Annual PI Eating Contest.
Fear not, parents; there will be no tummy aches in this contest. The challenge in this friendly competition is not to consume vast amount of pastry but to memorize as many digits of the number PI as possible.
As some of us may remember, PI, or π, is a mathematical constant which represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. PI is an irrational number, approximately equal to 3.14159265358979...
The NLC is offering cash and prizes totaling $1,000 to the biggest PI eaters. Registration for the contest is only $25 for children or $50 for adults and includes a workshop in advanced memorization strategies.
The idea of a PI eating contest was born several years ago when Gerald Hughes, Founder and Director of the Neuro-Linguistic Learning Center decided to memorize the first 1,000 digits of PI for his 50th birthday. “It was a fun challenge and a great learning experience,” said Gerald when asked about his previous achievement.
The Neuro-Linguistic Learning Center offers educational coaching and tutoring at all levels and specializes in helping children and adults overcome the effects of Dyslexia, ADD and other learning challenges.
“We’re hosting this contest to raise awareness and challenge some old ideas about what learning is and what it is not. We want to show parents and children that learning (even rote memorization) can be easy, fast and fun,” said Gerald. “In our practice, many children arrive at the NLC turned off to learning. We offer these children new skills and new hope. This contest is a fun opportunity for all participants to pick up new skills while having fun. Learning should be fun.”
